Equipping Saints For The Kingdom

Academy of Christian Training and Service (ACTS)
trains called men and women to fufill their potential in service to Christ

ACTS is recognized by American Baptists nationally as an accepted model of study for persons desiring to be certified as lay ministers. Graduates of the Certified Lay Minister preparation program can be certified by one’s local American Baptist church, after being recommended by their church’s association.

After certification, you may pastor a church, be an associate, youth, or interim pastor, do supply preaching, and/or generally work in your own church in a more educated and experienced way. Graduates may register with the American Baptist Personnel Services, and this can facilitate the possibility of being called to a church ministry position.

If called as a pastor, you will have the necessary recognition to perform weddings, and with the affirmation of the local church, may dedicate children, baptize, officiate at the Lord’s Supper, and conduct funerals.

A certified Lay Minister usually has the opportunity to do whatever an ordained person can do and should be well equipped to conduct quality ministry in the name of Christ.

“Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever.” Ephesians 3:21-22

Pastoral Leadership
This is a course covering the basics of being a leader in a Baptist church. It will include: the pastor as a person; an introduction to different personal styles of leadership and their effects; an introduction to the organization of a Baptist church; and ways a leader works with and can direct the various boards and committees. It will also present methods to be used in organizing worship, officiating at child dedications, performing baptisms, and serving the Lord’s Supper.

Communicating God’s Word effectively will be stressed. The personality of the preacher, styles of preaching, ways of organizing the sermon, creativity, illustrations, and delivery of the sermon will be covered. Each student will present at least one sermon for the class.
