Hurricane Florence Relief

All of us have been watching the devastation of Hurricane Florence in the Carolinas.   The loss of life and complete destruction of communities is heart wrenching.   Already, churches in ABCOPAD have been seeking information about how we can help those in need.   People have been asking, “How do I give to help victims who are struggling.”   People have been asking, “How can I serve those in need?”

First, let me say how much I appreciate the people of ABCOPAD. Thank you for your tenderhearted and giving spirit! I am so grateful for all the members of our Region who have a missional heart and a strong desire to be the hands and feet of Jesus for those in need. Please know how much I appreciate and value our partnership in ministry.

Next, let me also say, recovery in the Carolinas will be a long, ongoing process. I know there is a strong desire to go “Right Now” and help those in need. This desire to serve immediately in the crisis is heightened by the media coverage focusing on the disaster. Sadly, there are always people and groups who rush to help but only add to the crisis. There are limited places for people to stay following this type of disaster. EMS and other Emergency Response Agencies are busy trying to take care of victims and untrained volunteers arriving to help often only make matters worse, taxing a system already on overload.

Rushing to a disaster area in the first 3 - 5 days is normally less than helpful and in fact can do more harm than good.

One way you can help right now is by making donations to the OGHS ABCOPAD Disaster Relief Fund. These funds will be used both to help those in recovery as well as offset the cost of disaster relief teams who will be traveling to the Carolinas to assist those in need. Remember, using funds to help teams go and serve is economically very valuable. A single team doing a “mud out” can save a homeowner between $8000-$10,000. When you donate to the OGHS ABCOPAD Disaster Relief Fund, you help offset the cost of teams doing to serve which is very valuable.

Once housing has been established for disaster relief teams, and sites have been identified, we will begin coordinating teams to serve. Keep in mind, long after the media has moved on to other current high profile news items, the needs will remain in the Carolinas. We are still sending teams to Houston and Puerto Rico a year after the Hurricanes of 2017.

If you want to serve and can go immediately, a disaster relief organization I would recommend is Samaritan’s Purse. They are a high quality, effective ministry providing opportunities for people to serve shortly after a crisis. We have worked with Samaritan’s Purse following Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey and doing hurricane disaster relief in Texas. Simply go to the Samaritan’s Purse web site to sign up and participate in disaster relief efforts.

in the next week or two you will be hearing more from ABCOPAD regarding opportunities to serve and teams being launched. Thank you for your patience and understanding. To make a contribution to the OGHS ABCOPAD Disaster Relief Fund, (OGHS stands for One Great Hour of Sharing) you can go to our on-line giving web page to make a donation or send a contribution to our office with the check designated OGHS ABCOPAD Disaster Relief Fund. You can also give through your local church mission system designating your contribution to go to the OGHS ABCOPAD Disaster Relief Fund.

Again, thank you for your generosity and your desire to serve. We are very grateful for your partnership in ministry. God Bless, Mark
